Is My Spouse Cheating?

One relatively common reason for seeking divorce is adultery. However, determining whether your spouse is actually cheating is not always the easiest thing to do. Before hiring a private investigator or taking other means to observe your spouse’s activities, you should observe your spouse’s behavior. Observing your spouse’s behavior may help you determine if your spouse may be cheating, and if it is time to consider speaking with an Orlando or Tampa divorce lawyer.

It is critically important that you do not rush to judgment.

Below are 10 typical  behavioral signals that may show that your partner is cheating or having an affair. Keep in mind that just because your spouse exhibits some of these signs does not conclusively mean that your spouse is cheating.

  1. Your spouse is increasingly spending more time away – One of the most common signs that leads individuals to suspect their spouse is having an affair is if he or she is is always away from home or trying to come up with reasons or excuses for why they need to be away from home.
  2. Your spouse focuses on their appearance more –  If your spouse recently started focusing more on their appearance and changing their normal grooming habits, your spouse may be seeking to appeal to a romantic interest.
  3. Your spouse is no longer interested in being intimate– Another possible indicator that your spouse may be cheating is if your spouse is no longer interested in being intimate with you.
  4. Your spouse has friends of the opposite sex that you know nothing about - If your spouse is maintaining a relationsip with a member of the opposite sex, and your spouse is hesistant to talk about that individual or give you any details, this may be a sign that your spouse is enegaged in an affair. This is more concerning if you find that your spouse spends long periods of time with that individual.
  5. Your spouse is acting more secretive and dishonest - If you notice that your spouse is becoming more secretive about his or her whereabouts, activities, computer usage or phone usage, you may have cause for concern.
  6. Your spouse engages in many activities alone - If you find that your spouse is now much more comfortable doing certain activities alone, especially activities that you two once shared, this could be an indicator that your spouse is having an affair.
  7. Your spouse is no longer interested in the future of your relationship –If your spouse is displaying an increasing disinterest in your relationship and its future, then this could be an indicator that your spouse is having an affair. Specifically, if you find that your spouse no longer plans for, or considers, the future of your relationship or if your spouse no longer cares about the success of your relationship, your spouse may be having an affair.
  8. Your spouse consistently starts arguments – If your spouse constantly initiates arguments, this could be another indicator that your spouse is having an affair. Another indicator is if your spouse constantly makes accusations during these arguments. For example, if during these arguments, your spouse accuses you of cheating or makes comments regarding their unhappiness with the relationship.
  9. Your friends and family notice that something is wrong in your relationship - It may be easier for your friends or family members to recognize disharmony in your relationship since it is often easier to recognize problems in a relationship from an objective standpoint.
  10. You get the sense that something is amiss – Don’t overlook your gut feeling. You know your spouse better than anyone else. If you feel that something is irregular, do not ignore this feeling.

It is critically important that you do not rush to judgment. If your spouse is guilty of one or several of the behaviors on the list above, it may indeed be a sign that he or she is cheating. However, if you notice your spouse engaging in some of the behavior described above, that does not necessarily mean that your spouse is cheating. If your spouse is engaging in any of these behaviors, it may also indicate that your relationship is suffering in some other way, whether from a lack of communication, trust or understanding. Either way, it is important to communicate your feelings to your spouse and refrain from blaming or accusing. Jumping to conclusions may permanently damage the relationship. Seek to understand your spouse’s behavior first. However, if your spouse is unwilling to help resolve your marital strife, contact a knowledgeable divorce attorney for advice on what additional steps to take to discover whether your spouse is cheating.
