Helping Kids Through Divorce

Divorce often affects the children more than the spouses involved. Divorce is the first step forward towards a new for each spouse; however, life for the children will change as well.  For example, the Children may not be seeing both parents every day, they may also have to change homes and schools.  Therefore, it is crucial to give children extra support to help them through divorce.

Divorce is the first step forward towards a new for each spouse; however, life for the children will change as well.
  • It’s not Their Fault – Children hear more than we all think and they are impressionable. It’s not uncommon for children to think that the divorce is somehow their fault.  Take time to explain to your children that the divorce has nothing to do with them. It’s between you and your spouse. If you are on good enough terms with your spouse, having this conversation together, as a family, can help ease the child immensely.
  • Stability in Their Schedule – Try to keep the children’s normal schedule as stable as possible. Try to keep them in the same activities and extracurriculars. Make sure they are aware of any changes in their schedule and make sure they are aware of when they will see each parent.
  • Maximize your time – Spend more time with your children. Make sure it’s quality time with them. Read a book to them, take them somewhere fun. Play with them. Show them that it’s not all doom and gloom from here on.
  • Talk and act Positively – Talk positively of the other parent in front of the children. Negative talk and blame games only stress children out and put them squarely in the middle of divorce. This also goes for when you are with the other parent. Eventually your children will graduate, get married etc. and both parents will need to be present. How you treat each other at that special event will mean a lot to the child.
